Would you buy a tiny home from Home Depot?

Ready for a change?  Looking to downsize or avoid paying expensive rent for a tiny condo or apartment? Want a little land (or maybe a lot)?  Well, these are all good reasons to look into a tiny home, and lucky for us, Home Depot now makes this pretty easy with what they call Tuff Sheds. Tiny homes are all the rage right now on Tiktok, Pinterest, and Instagram.  We see off the grid glamping stays, Airbnb rentals, or folks who just desired a more minimilistic lifestyle, and just maybe, they have the right idea!

With the purchase of any home, there is so much to consider.  A tiny home obviously comes with much less space, but it also comes with a lot of benefits. For starters, less space = less cleaning, and who doesn’t love that?! It forces you to become a bit more mindful of having a lot of clutter in the home, and to really downsize your excess belongings, cutting ties to objects. Heating and cooling a smaller space is far less expensive, cutting down on utilities bills.  The carbon footprint of a tiny home is also far less than a standard sized home, an added benefit!

Okay, let’s get to one of the most appealing benefits in my humble opinion – the cost of a tiny home. When building independently, you will have to pay upfront for materials and supplies to build the home, which on average can range from $30,000 – $60,000.  According to Home Depot’s website, the Tuff Sheds range from $20,000 – $65,000 (less for the smaller “guest homes”), making the prices very comparable, especially considering that delivery is included. Through their “Build a Quote” program, buyers can obtain a quote for their products and design and installation options.

Okay, so maybe you are ready to move forward with purchasing a tiny home as a rental, an Airbnb, or to live in, but there is one last important topic – financing (unless you can afford to just dish out the cash of course.  Typically, most mortgage companies will require a loan amount exceeding the typical cost of a tiny home – but have no fear, there are still options! While Home Depot does have financing available, there may be other options as such as a personal loan, an RV loan if the home is capable of being moved, contractor or building financing, a project loan, or a HELOC loan.  Also, since we cannot just park our tiny home anywhere, you will need land as well – taking into consideration zoning laws, electricity, water, etc.

When it comes to finding the perfect spot for your tiny home, don’t go it alone.  Seek a local real estate agent who has experience in finding land.  If you are local, don’t hesitate to reach out, I’d love to help you! Let’s chat.Â
